Day 5 done. With over 700kms in our legs, there are some tired bodies across the peloton. But we keep pedaling.

On the Chain Reaction Challenge, a 6:30am breakfast feels like a sleep-in. Not long after, we set off to begin our journey toward Rotorua. We headed down to Mt Maunganui to take in some of the Bay of Plenty views, with the roll made more challenging by strong easterly winds.

A cherished tradition at Chain Reaction is presenting jerseys during the nightly presentations. The recipients lead the peloton the next day, and today, the following individuals had the honor.

The Yellow Jersey, sponsored by Qualitas, which is awarded to the highest individual fundraiser on the ride.

The Green Jersey, sponsored by Panoptic Solutions, in its10th year as Chain Reaction’s medical supplier, which is awarded as the sprinter’s jersey.

The Black Jersey sponsored by LSH Auto, the long-time supplier of vehicles for Chain Reaction, which is awarded for their rider who embodies the spirit of Chain Reaction.

The White Jersey, sponsored by JC Decaux, which is awarded to the best young or new rider; and

The Polka Dot Jersey, sponsored by Kit For A Cause, which is awarded to an individual who has overcome a significant challenge to participate in Chain Reaction.

We were headed down towards Rotorua, through beautiful rolling countryside, cows happily chewing on juicy grass everywhere you looked. As we stretched our legs during free play, the camaraderie was plentiful - everyone willing to extend a helping wheel to those finding the inclines more demanding today.

Lunch was served at the Manawahe School Hall, perfectly positioned at the top of the day's tough 14km climb. A tasty, straightforward sandwich lunch provided a well-deserved break before tackling the final 60km stretch.

Our luck with the weather ran out today, as we found ourselves not only dealing with the distance, but also challenging conditions. The rain was relentless for the last 2 hours, demanding additional concentration and focus from all.

We all made it safely to Rotorua and have two days remaining to complete 1,000km of riding for Kids in Need.
