After a restless night’s sleep, the last rider got his bike just half an hour before roll out then we were on our way. Our mechanics Luke and JJ are amazing with their support.

The day 1 jersey winners proudly lead the way in the impressive new designs.

After clearing the traffic lights through Auckland we finally hit the coast and rolling country hills. A couple of little climbs and we were sipping electrolyte drinks with ripe bananas at the rest stops. Postcard views were a highlight. We also saw our first sheep since arriving in NZ.

The final climbs were not too long. Roadworks provided a few gravel sections and the workers were all on the tools or directing traffic. Friendly locals cheered us on so we were all relaxed and thinking the majority of the work was over for the day.

The final 45 kms provided the challenge of strong headwinds and traffic so much of it in single file. Marshall White’s Scott and Daniel were champions sitting out the front for much of the day ably assisted by the stronger riders in the peloton.

We are raising money for ventilators for the Neonatal and Paediatric intensive care units at Monash Children’s. Every time we feel breathless heading up a steep climb, we are aware that our effort is nothing in comparison to what children with respiratory problems go through. Golden Grace Brown tapped out a steady tempo then blasted up the hill leaving others in her wake.  She provides the inspiration to dig deep and extend ourselves to our limits.
