Inside the Peloton Sydney 2025 - Day 1

The Chain Reaction Challenge Sydney kicked off with great enthusiasm and an unwavering spirit on Day 1. 48 Cyclists from diverse backgrounds gathered at the starting line, ready to embark on a journey that is as much about camaraderie as it is about pushing personal limits to raise much needed funds for So They Can and Baptist Care Hopestreet. The atmosphere was electric, charged with excitement and a sense of purpose.

The day began with an early morning assembly, where participants gathered for an early breakfast, loading up on water, nutrients for the first stage and final gear checks. The darkness of dawn the cyclists in their brightly coloured jerseys standing out reflecting the impact this challenge has on so many lives. After photos of the riders who were awarded day 1 jerseys, the riders headed off with cheers and applause, setting the tone for a day filled with challenges and achievements.

The first leg of the challenge took the riders across the undulating terrain from Auckland Airport to Half Moon Bay to catch the Ferry across to Kennedy Port, Waiheke Island. After a fairly gentle start to the day, the true test of the riders awaited with the undulating terrain of Waiheke Island. With inclines of between 10% and 15% the riders were pushed to their limits, not only testing their endurance but reminding them all of the real reason we are here, the CHILDREN. As they pedalled through the winding roads and challenging inclines, the riders were greeted by the sight of amazing countryside and views of Hauraki Gulf, with its turquoise waters and expansive views.
Along the way, strategically placed pit stops provided much-needed respite for the cyclists. These rest points were bustling with activity as volunteers offered refreshments, sunscreen, medical assistance, and words of encouragement. After the first 77km, the riders were greeted by the tranquillity and beauty of the Strand, Onetangi and a well-deserved lunch at Charlie Farley’s. After lunch the rider headed back to Kennedy Port to catch the return Ferry to Half Moon Bay, but not before more challenging inclines, that thanks to the well-deserved lunch fuelled the riders to attack further includes that tested the entire peloton.

Day 1 was marked by several highlights that showcased the spirit of the Chain Reaction Challenge. One of the most inspiring moments was when a group of riders, who had faced a particularly steep climb, reached the summit above Hauraki Gulf, with the amazing views rewarded the efforts of all riders.

After a long, hot day in the saddle, covering over 130kms, 1,570mof elevation and 5 hours in the saddle, the riders approached the finish line of Day 1, greeted by a wave of applause and cheers from the support crew. The sense of accomplishment was evident on their faces, reflecting the hard work and dedication that had carried them through the day.
