The day kicked off in Rotorua with a scenic (and slightly smelly) tour of the local geothermal wonders—nothing like a good egg-fart-scented wake-up call. Motivation levels were questionable, and prying people away from the breakfast buffet took some serious effort. Shoutout to Cindy for rallying the troops!
We rolled out with a lap of the lake, promised a refreshment stop at 30km… only to find ourselves still pedaling at 45km with no snacks in sight. There was a collective desperate dash to the toilet once we finally got there. Once refueled, we hit some beautiful rolling country roads as we headed in the direction of LakeTaupo, and reveled in the absence of traffic.
Then came the free-play sections, and things got spicy! Some riders were really flexing their day-six legs, launching watt bombs left, right, and center. Hats off to Kaine Lanyon and John "The Butcher" Manolis for dishing out some blistering attacks on the peloton.
A stunning rest stop at Ohakuri Dam at the 100km mark gave us just enough energy to tackle a solid 2km climb straight out of the gate. The group is looking stronger and more cohesive every day, which is good news, because after 160km of undulating roads, we finally rolled into Taupo, ready to collapse.
Massages, beers, and hot chips were on the menu for recovery. Tomorrow, we take on the full loop of Lake Taupo, and with fundraising targets still in sight, we’re pushing all the way to the finish line.
