Inside the Peloton Day 3 Sydney

28 Feb 2023
Day 3 through New Zealand's South Island started with an early morning bus transfer from Greymouth situated on the banks of the Grey River to Ross, arriving at the Bank of New South Wales, a grand building on the town's main street, constructed in 1867 when gold was discovered in the region, and is now a museum.

Todays track presented some tough pinches towards the end of the day contributing to almost 2,000 metres of vertical ascent, and as the week marches on it can be difficult to keep pushing through at times, but it's important to remember why we are here - for our charity partners. The fundraising and awareness-raising efforts that we are undertaking makes a real difference in the lives of those in need.

As Henry Ford famously said, "When everything seems to be going against you, remember that the airplane takes off against the wind, not with it." This quote can be applied to many aspects of life, including cycling. Sometimes, the most difficult times can be the most rewarding, as they push us to dig deeper and find the strength to overcome adversity.

Today we cycled through some of the most stunning scenery. the lush rainforest, lakes, glacial streams, snow-capped mountains and an array of bridge designs from simple beam bridges to complex cable-stayed bridges which are an important part of the West coast infrastructure offering both practical and aesthetic benefits to the communities they serve.

The peloton took a short detour at Franz Joseph glacier, which has retreated around 25 meters since our last visit eight years ago, slower compared to the period between 2008 and 2015, when the glacier was retreating by an average of about 10 meters per year. None the less it serves as a reminder of the impact of climate change on our environment and the importance of sustainable practices.

Overall, Day 3 may have presented some challenges, but it also presented an opportunity to remember the importance of the cause we are riding for, and to find the inner strength to push through tough times. And just like an airplane taking off against the wind, our efforts in the face of difficulty can be truly inspiring and impactful.
