Day 2 saw the Peloton head south to Innisfail and with a 7am start the riders were greeted with cooler conditions to start the day. As the temperatures rose the riders found shade with a 20 km climb up onto the table land. Whilst the climb was tough it was offset by the amazing scenery with the rainforest surroundings extending as far as the eye could see. The site of the LSH Auto car parked at Lake Barrine was a welcome site as exhausted riders stopped to refuel and catch their breath. The sense of accomplishment was high as riders cheered each other home and for the first time the “Challenge” element of Chain Reaction was real. The sense of accomplishment quickly took a back seat as the realisation that another 100km was required to reach our destination.
As the tree cover was left behind the riders felt the full force of the North Queensland sun. As the group split into their teams the sense of comradery grew as all riders pushed to reach our lunchtime stop at Millaa Millaa. With exhaustion setting in, the Millaa Millaa pub ensured riders were hydrated and nutrition was paramount with hot chips and calamary rings proving to be a favourite amongst the riders.
The table lands continued to amaze with the riders making a short trip to the Millaa Millaa Waterfall for a photo opportunity. The refreshing mist was just as welcome as the waterfall itself.
A 50km grind to the end was made easier with some flowing downhill sections as the group stuck together as one to will each other to the finish line. The enjoyment of the downhills was offset as the riders learnt that they would be riding the other way to start tomorrow morning.
Day 2 made it clear to the group that North Queensland will push them to their limits, but also introduce them to one of the most picturesque locations on earth.
Looking forward to day 3.
